HOW DO YOU GET TO MACHU PICCHU?
There is no road connecting Cusco directly to Machu Picchu. Most travelers reach the sanctuary through Machupicchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes).
🚆 By Train
The most popular option is traveling by train from Ollantaytambo, Poroy, or another authorized departure point toward Machupicchu Pueblo.
From Aguas Calientes, travelers continue by shuttle bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
Train services vary in comfort and style. Depending on your tour, you may travel aboard services such as:
- Expedition Train – comfortable and practical.
- Vistadome Train – panoramic windows and a more immersive journey through the
Andes. - Other premium train services may also be available depending on your itinerary and
availability.
Tip: Your train schedule determines much of your day’s itinerary, so we recommend confirming your preferred travel date and train service as early as possible.
🥾 BY INCA TRAIL OR TREK
For travelers looking for a deeper adventure, Machu Picchu can also be reached by trekking.
Classic Inca Trail – 4 Days / 3 Nights
Follow the legendary Inca Trail through spectacular Andean landscapes and archaeological sites before entering Machu Picchu through Inti Punku, the Sun Gate.
Short Inca Trail – 2 Days / 1 Night
A shorter but rewarding option combining a scenic trek, impressive archaeological sites, Wiñay Wayna, and entry to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
Salkantay Trek
A spectacular alternative for adventurous travelers, combining high mountain scenery, glacial landscapes, tropical valleys, and the final journey toward Machu Picchu. MACHU PICCHU CIRCUITS & ROUTES
Machu Picchu now operates under a system of three main circuits divided into ten routes. The route printed on your entrance ticket determines which areas of the archaeological site you can visit.
CIRCUIT 1 — PANORAMIC
Circuit 1 focuses on elevated viewpoints and panoramic perspectives of the citadel.
Routes include:
- Route 1-A – Machupicchu Mountain
- Route 1-B – Upper Terrace
- Route 1-C – Intipunku / Sun Gate
- Route 1-D – Inka Bridge
Some routes are available only during the designated high season.
CIRCUIT 2 — MACHUPICCHU CLASSIC
For travelers who want a more traditional experience of Machu Picchu, Circuit 2 is one of the most sought-after options.
It includes:
- Route 2-A – Designed Route
- Route 2-B – Lower Terrace Route
This circuit provides access to many of the iconic archaeological areas and is an excellent choice for first-time visitors, subject to ticket availability.
CIRCUIT 3 — MACHUPICCHU ROYALTY
Circuit 3 explores the lower and royal sector of Machu Picchu.
Routes include:
- Route 3-A – Huayna Picchu Mountain
- Route 3-B – Designed Route
- Route 3-C – Great Cavern
- Route 3-D – Huchuy Picchu
Some routes are seasonal and require the corresponding ticket.
Important: Machu Picchu tickets are sold for a specific circuit, route, date, and entry time.
Always verify that the route included with your tour matches the experience you want.
🎟️ MACHU PICCHU TICKETS
Entrance tickets are required to visit Machu Picchu.
The Peruvian Ministry of Culture manages ticket sales through the official Tu Boleto platform. Travelers select their date, circuit, route, entry time, and visitor information when purchasing.
Book Early
Machu Picchu has limited daily capacity, and popular dates and routes can sell out well in advance.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT MACHU PICCHU?
Machu Picchu can be visited throughout the year, but conditions change significantly between the dry and rainy seasons.
☀️ Dry Season — May to September
Generally characterized by less rainfall and good conditions for trekking and sightseeing.
Best for:
Hiking, photography, trekking, and travelers who prefer a lower chance of rain.
🌦️ Shoulder Season — April & October
These months can offer a great balance between weather and visitor levels.
🌧️ Rainy Season — November to March
Rain is more frequent, but the mountains can be beautifully green and atmospheric.
Important: Weather in the Andes can change quickly. Even during the dry season, rain is
always possible.
🌡️ WEATHER AT MACHU PICCHU
Machu Picchu has a subtropical mountain climate.
You may experience:
- Cool mornings
- Warm periods during the day
- Strong sun
- Cloud and mist
- Sudden rain
- Cooler temperatures later in the afternoon
Our recommendation: Dress in layers and always carry a lightweight rain jacket.
⛰️ ALTITUDE & ACCLIMATIZATION
Machu Picchu itself is located at approximately 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level.
This is significantly lower than Cusco, which means some travelers actually find Machu
Picchu easier to breathe in than Cusco.
However, if your itinerary includes trekking at higher elevations—such as the Inca Trail,
Salkantay Trek, Rainbow Mountain, or Huayna Picchu—altitude becomes more important.
Our recommendation
Allow yourself time to acclimatize in Cusco before undertaking a demanding trek.
For longer hikes, arriving 2–3 days before the trek is a good general starting point for acclimatization.

For Trekking
If you are hiking the Inca Trail or another trek, you will need additional equipment and clothing appropriate for changing temperatures and altitude.
Tip: Weather can change quickly, so the best strategy is to prepare for sun, rain, and cooler conditions.
🥾 YOUR PASSPORT IS IMPORTANT
Your passport information must correspond with your Machu Picchu reservation. For international travelers, we recommend carrying the same valid passport used when booking your Machu Picchu ticket.
Keep your passport somewhere secure but easily accessible because you may need it during your train journey, hotel check-in, or Machu Picchu visit.
🚌 FROM AGUAS CALIENTES TO MACHU PICCHU
Once you arrive in Machupicchu Pueblo, you can travel to the entrance of Machu Picchu by shuttle bus.
The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic and operating conditions.
Alternatively, visitors can walk from Machupicchu Pueblo to the sanctuary, although this involves a significant uphill climb and is not necessary when your tour includes the bus service.

Your entrance ticket includes a designated entry time.
The official Machu Picchu authorities establish visiting hours according to the current circuits and routes.
Because entry schedules and route conditions can change, we recommend checking the official information for your travel date.

🚫 MACHU PICCHU VISITOR RULES
Machu Picchu is a protected World Heritage site, and visitors must follow the regulations established by the authorities.
To help preserve this extraordinary place:

- Follow your guide’s instructions.
- Do not touch or climb archaeological structures.
- Do not litter.
- Respect other visitors.
- Do not use drones unless specifically authorized.
- Avoid bringing prohibited objects.
- Follow the designated entry and exit procedures.
The current regulations and permitted routes should always be checked before your visit.
💧 FOOD, WATER & RESTROOMS
There are limited services inside the archaeological sanctuary, so we recommend preparing before entering.
Before your visit:
- Use the restroom before entering.
- Carry water according to current regulations.
- Eat before entering if your itinerary requires it.
- Keep your belongings organized.
Once inside, follow the current visitor rules regarding food, drinks, and personal belongings.
📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
Machu Picchu offers incredible photographic opportunities throughout the day.
For the classic panoramic views:
Early morning can offer atmospheric mist and softer light.
Mid-morning often provides clearer visibility and excellent mountain views.
Cloudy conditions can create dramatic photographs and give the ruins an especially mystical atmosphere.
Don’t spend your entire visit behind the camera. Take time to put your phone away and experience the landscape around you.

The best train depends on what you value.
If you care most about price, choose Expedition.
If you care about scenery and comfort, choose Vistadome.

The most expensive option is not automatically the best option for every traveler.
