  3. Emergency contact information
  4. Inca Trail and Machu Picchu reservation details

BACKPACK & DAYPACK

When the Journey Becomes Part of the Adventure

DAYPACK

A comfortable 20–30 liter daypack is ideal for carrying the essentials you need while hiking.
We recommend keeping the following with you:

  1. Water
  2. Rain jacket or poncho
  3. Sun protection
  4. Snacks
  5. Camera or phone
  6. Personal medication
  7. Extra clothing layer
  8. Passport
  9. Small personal essentials

Choose a backpack with comfortable shoulder straps and, ideally, a waist or hip belt for better weight distribution.

BACKPACK RAIN COVER

Andean weather can change quickly. A waterproof backpack cover, dry bags, or waterproof packing bags will help protect your clothing, electronics, and other essentials.

Pro tip: Keep at least one complete change of clothing completely dry for camp.

👕 CLOTHING

THE SECRET: DRESS IN LAYERS

Temperatures can change dramatically throughout the day. The best strategy is to wear lightweight layers that you can easily add or remove as conditions change.

HIKING SHIRTS

Choose breathable, quick-drying materials instead of heavy cotton.
Recommended:

  1. 2–4 hiking shirts
  2. At least 1 long-sleeve shirt for sun and cold protection
HIKING PANTS

Bring comfortable, lightweight trekking pants that allow plenty of movement. Convertible hiking pants can be useful during warmer sections of the trail.

FLEECE OR WARM MID-LAYER

A fleece jacket or lightweight insulating layer is highly recommended for:

  1. Cold mornings
  2. Evenings at camp
  3. Higher sections of the trail
  4. Rest stops
WARM JACKET

For the Classic Inca Trail, a lightweight down or synthetic insulated jacket is strongly recommended. Higher elevations and nighttime temperatures can feel significantly colder than expected.

WATERPROOF JACKET

A lightweight waterproof and windproof jacket is an essential part of your trekking kit— even during the dry season.

RAIN PONCHO

A quality rain poncho provides additional protection during heavier rain and can also help protect your daypack.

UNDERWEAR

Bring comfortable, moisture-wicking underwear suitable for several days of hiking.

HIKING SOCKS

Pack approximately 3–4 pairs of good-quality hiking socks for the Classic Inca Trail. Choose moisture-wicking socks and avoid starting your trek with completely new socks.

 HIKING FOOTWEAR

HIKING BOOTS OR TREKKING SHOES

Your footwear is one of the most important choices you will make.
Look for hiking boots or trekking shoes with:

  1. Good grip
  2. Reliable traction on wet stone
  3. Comfortable cushioning
  4. A secure fit
  5. Ankle support if you prefer it
NEVER HIKE THE INCA TRAIL IN BRAND-NEW BOOTS.

Break them in before arriving in Peru. Wear them on several hikes so you know they are comfortable and won’t cause blisters.

LIGHTWEIGHT CAMP SHOES

Optional but highly recommended.
A pair of lightweight shoes or sandals can feel great after a long day on the trail.

️ SUN PROTECTION

The Andean sun can be surprisingly intense, particularly at high altitude.
Pack:

  1. High-SPF sunscreen
  2. UV-protection sunglasses
  3. Sun hat or cap
  4. SPF lip balm

Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially during exposed sections of the trail.

 COLD-WEATHER ESSENTIALS

Higher elevations and early mornings can be cold.
We recommend bringing:

  1. Warm hat or beanie
  2. Lightweight gloves
  3. Fleece or insulated jacket
  4. Warm base layer
  5. Neck gaiter or buff

These items are particularly useful around Warmiwañusqa Pass, the highest point of the Classic Inca Trail.

️ RAIN PROTECTION

Rain is always possible in the Andes, even during the traditional dry season.
Be prepared with:

  1. Waterproof jacket
  2. Rain poncho
  3. Backpack rain cover
  4. Waterproof bags or dry bags
  5. Waterproof protection for electronics

Keep your sleeping clothes and one complete change of clothes dry. You’ll appreciate it when you arrive at camp.

🥾 PERSONAL HYGIENE

Keep toiletries small, lightweight, and practical.
Consider packing:

  1. Toothbrush and toothpaste
  2. Small biodegradable soap
  3. Hand sanitizer
  4. Wet wipes
  5. Toilet paper
  6. Small quick-drying towel
  7. Deodorant
  8. Personal hygiene products

Pack toiletries inside resealable or waterproof bags to keep everything organized.

🥾 PERSONAL FIRST-AID KIT

Your Peru Hikers trekking team carries group safety equipment, but you should bring your own personal medications and basic first-aid supplies.
Consider:

  1. Prescription medication
  2. Blister treatment
  3. Adhesive bandages
  4. Personal pain-relief medication
  5. Insect repellent
  6. Electrolytes
  7. Any medication specifically recommended by your doctor

Important: If you have a medical condition or allergy that could be relevant during the trek, inform the Peru Hikers team before departure.

🥾 TREKKING POLES

Trekking poles can be extremely useful on the Inca Trail, particularly on long descents and uneven Inca stone stairways.
They can help with:

  1. Balance
  2. Stability
  3. Reducing strain on your knees
  4. Wet or slippery sections
  5. Long downhill stretches

For trail conservation, use rubber tips where required.

🛏️ SLEEPING GEAR

For the Classic Inca Trail, a warm sleeping bag suitable for Andean nighttime temperatures is essential.

If sleeping equipment is included or available for rent through your Peru Hikers trek, check your specific booking before purchasing additional equipment.
A sleeping bag liner is optional but can provide additional warmth and comfort.

🔦 ELECTRONICS & POWER

You don’t need to bring your entire electronics collection.
Useful items include:

  1. Smartphone
  2. Camera
  3. Portable power bank
  4. Charging cables
  5. Spare camera batteries
  6. Headlamp

There is limited access to electricity along the Classic Inca Trail, so a fully charged power bank is highly recommended.

HEADLAMP

A headlamp is one of the most useful items you can bring.
You’ll appreciate it for:

  1. Early-morning starts
  2. Moving around camp after dark
  3. Organizing your belongings at night

Bring spare batteries if your headlamp requires them.

🍫 TREKKING SNACKS

Your meals are provided according to your Peru Hikers trekking program, but carrying a few favorite snacks can be useful for extra energy during the day.
Good options include:

  1. Energy bars
  2. Nuts
  3. Dried fruit
  4. Chocolate
  5. Electrolyte tablets or powder

Choose lightweight, high-energy snacks that are easy to access while hiking.

🎒 OPTIONAL BUT USEFUL

These items aren’t essential, but many hikers appreciate having them:

  1. Small travel pillow
  2. Earplugs
  3. Lightweight trekking towel
  4. Waterproof phone case
  5. Extra shoelaces
  6. Small notebook
  7. Camera
  8. Binoculars
  9. Reusable organizing bags
  10. Playing cards for camp

 WHAT NOT TO PACK

Every unnecessary item becomes extra weight on the trail.

Leave behind:

  1. Heavy suitcases
  2. Excessive clothing
  3. Large toiletries
  4. Expensive jewelry
  5. Unnecessary electronics
  6. Heavy books
  7. Large amounts of cash

Pack light. Carry smart. Enjoy the journey.
